Former jcpenney (patrick henry mall)

This 84,085 square foot store was opened in 1965 and was open until 1989, when it was replaced by a 50,000 square foot store at Liberty Fair Mall across town. It has not had a permanent tenant since.

Despite the appearance of a second salesfloor, this store used the second floor only for storage and offices. When Penney’s phased out hard goods in 1983, the store was remodeled, and it maintains a vintage mid-’80s Penney’s appearance inside to this day.

There was an attached Penney’s auto center with gas pumps on the west side of the store that lasted until 1983, then was added to the interior space for a men’s department expansion and JCPenney Styling Salon. After 1989, the space was added to a restaurant that was built in an expansion wing built adjacent to the Penney’s building.
